Winter Season- Club Championships with SAMA
We held our second, and longest, instalment of our club championships in
conjunction with the SA Masters and it was a huge success! Over a 2.5km course
Darren Bown was the easy winner over 15km, as was Tanya Holliday in the women's.
Tanya tackled the distance for the first time and was outstanding in her speed and
consistency. Gloria Holliday was the standout however just missing the 90 minute
mark in a huge PB, which also included a 10km PB.
The whole field in the under 15 5km did PB's which is an indication of their depth and
competitiveness. It looks like last weeks handicaps showed a few people they have
more speed in them than they thought! Especially Jessica Stephens who took over 3
minutes off her PB!
In Canada, despite a very promising lead up, Paige Hooper has unfortunately been
disqualified over 10km at the world juniors.
There were so many highlights in Canberra that I need to apologise now if I leave
anyone out!
Firstly so many of our young new walkers went to Canberra for their first national
event, then most of them did a PB and some even picked up a medal whether
individual, handicap or team.
For full times and PB's see the results page, however special mentions are going to
Allegra and Blake Steele, the only two walkers to back up from the morning 10 miler
to do a 5km in the afternoon. Blake managed to pick up a 3rd in the 10 miles, then
second in the 5km. The girls under 12 trio of Rhiannon Lovegrove, Kailah Hannaford
and Elsie Potezny all walked PB's to win a bronze medal for the teams event. Riona
Tyler Dowd picked up a 1st and 2nd in her events for the handicap, showing a
remarkable improvement from the little athletics come and try days.
In the older age groups we were all happy to see the success of the Holliday girls.
Tanya made her comeback to national racing by winning the 5km, also picking up the
silver team medal with Claire Xian and Samara. Samara herself walked a huge PB in
her first race, then backed up in a barely slower time to help the aforementioned
team. In the under 18 5km Samara joined Amber Tuscharski and Jemma Potezny in
winning the team silver. In the masters 5km Gloria picked up the silver, also winning
the team silver with Silke Danner and Barb Cain.As in past years our girls were a real
stand out. Paige Hooper showed that she's more than ready for world juniors by
cruising to 2nd place in the 10 miler.
Honourable mentions go to Kim Mottrom, who won the open men's 10km and to
Sandy Brunner for winning the 10 mile fitness walk by over 12 minutes.
The only sour notes were a couple of disqualifications and an injury problem for
Kristie Goznik. A couple of the walkers disqualified appeared to walk quite differently
to how we see them in SA and were perhaps feeling the pressure. No doubt with time
these walkers will return to their best!
Check out the photos from the ASA presentation where Darren Bown won open male
athlete of the year, Gloria Holliday won the over 35 women, Paige Hooper won the
under 18 women and junior athlete, Blake Steele won the under 18 men, Claire Xian
won the under 20 women and Peter Crump won the over 35 men. Lauren Harrington
won the under 18 girls. Claire Tallent won the SARWC outstanding walker award for
her amazing successes in the previous years. What a year for our club!
This winter for the first time we will have a "club rule" category, which will be for
walkers who don't feel confident yet that they can meet the IAAF standards for
judging. The rules in relation to club rules are as follows;
1. Walkers may elect to compete in any competition of the SARWC Inc. as a 'Club
Rule' walker. Note there is no category of ‘Club Rule’ walker in state championships.
2. If a club walker, in the opinion of an individual judge, uses bent legs to gain an
advantage either over other competitors whether club rule walkers or not, or in order
to improve performance, they will be issued with a red card. Club rule walkers shall
only be judged for 'loss of contact' under IAAF rules. Disqualification takes place in
accordance with the normal IAAF procedures.
3. Club rule walkers must be identifiable. Different coloured numbers or other
distinguishing items e.g. arm bands, ribbons tied to uniform etc. shall be used.
4. Club rule walkers shall not receive points for any non club rule walking event
whether an individual, style, team or handicap event nor be eligible for trophies in
non club rule walking events categories unless points are gained when/if that athlete
competes in a non club rule walker event.
Note: This does not preclude the introduction of Awards/Trophies for the club rule
walker category.
5. 'Club rule' walkers must be registered members of the SARWC Inc.
SARWC President and Oceania Walking Judge, Zoe Bryson, is one of two Australian
judges selected by Athletics Australia to travel to Paris later this year to undertake
the IAAF Race Judging Certification and Accreditation examinations.
Zoe will face tough competition in that approximately 70 walk judges from around the
world will be present and will vie for the top 25 or so positions which will make them
eligible to officiate at major IAAF events such as the Olympic Games, World
Championships etc.
Congratulations Zoe. A great result for South Australia.
Darren Bown has been elected (unopposed) to the Board of Athletics SA Inc.
Congratulations Darren.
The second little athletics come and try day was a huge success with 15 young
athletes coming to walk either 1km or 2km. The following athletes achieved PB's in
comparison to their first walk a month ago- Erin Dallimore, Lachlan Tyler Dowd,
Rhiannon Lovegrove, Chantelle Nicolaides, Michael Nicolaides, Kaihlah Hannaford,
Nicholas Dallimore, Riona Tyler Dowd, Owen Guthrie, Ethan Martland Dabbouss,
Jessica Stephens, Thomas Martland and Simone Martland. Those who didn't get
better, were very close however! Congratulations to all walkers who came out and
tried their best. It was an enjoyable day for all and hopefully we'll see them all out
again this coming winter season.
Little athletics results are attached just to the left of this paragraph.
For our first little athletics Come and Try day, we had an excellent turn out of 20 little
athletes from 9 years and up. Unfortunately, and disappointingly we had only one
club member under the age of 25 come out to support the club and offer
encouragement to the new walkers. However despite this, the day was a huge
success with many walkers showing a lot of potential and many young walkers
interested in joining us in the winter.

Bob Cruise has finally completed his History of SA book, which is for sale directly
from him for $30. Any profits of the book will go to the walkers club once the costs
have been covered so please support the book.
